Some practical information before arrival

Welcome to all new Wageninger in the City of Life Science
From Schiphol (Amsterdam) airport to Wageningen
Transportation is quite easy and straight forward in Holland. Just after immigration and luggage claim, there is a train ticket office (NS, Netherlands Spoorwagen). You can buy ticket from counter, it cost around 14 euro to Ede-wageningen and takes around 1hour. There is a large hording board where you can see the train departure information. You have to take train to Nijmegen (YOUR FINAL DESTINATION IS EDE-WAGENINGEN NOT NIJMEGEN).
Just go downstairs to the indicated platform (usually spoor 3 or 4), there are trains to and from various parts of Holland. There are two options, direct to Ede Wageningen and via Utrecht. It is wise to take direct train to Ede-wageningen If you miss a direct train to Ede-wageningen, don’t panic the next train will arrive after 30 min and your ticket will work 24 hours. If you come via Utrecht, you have to change the train in Utrecht and catch the train to Ede-wageningen. Remember same ticket will work for you.
In station Ede-wageningen, take bus no. 88; after 12-15 min you will be in Drovendaalsteeg (this is your destination), the main University building. The bus ticket will cost around 2.0 euros.
Some practical consideration
Nepalese Student Society, Wageningen want to give some advice during your arrival in Wageningen. This information should be taken as guidelines, personal circumstance may differ substantially.
As you know, Holland is a cold place but central heating system keeps the building warm. Few warm clothes will be sufficient for outside. You can buy them here as well. The price of jacket starts from around 40 euros, sometime you can find even cheaper. We suggest you to bring one warm jacket and another light one so that you can have few days to look the market and make a decision. All other cloths are not so expensive than Nepal so it’s your choice. Generally student housing provides white bed cover (tanna), if you like colourful, you may bring with you. We suggest you not to bring any formal clothes like suit and formal leather shoes but again its upto you.
Bike (it is bicycle by the way) is daily essence here, so warm gloves are indispensible material you should have. Raincoat can be handy than umbrella but it can be also useless if you can escape the movement during rainfall.
We remembered those days when we were at your place and worried about cooking materials and cooking utensil. This depends more on your hosing facilities. Generally, two types of housing available, one with personal kitchen and other common kitchen. In either case, it is not wise to bring cooking utensils, you can buy easily but it is better to bring rice cooker and pressure cooker with you if you love cooking daal and bhat. Pressure cooker is not available here but you can buy rice cooker here in slightly higher price (25-30 euro). In either case it is not wise decision to bring other utensils except rice and pressure cooker. Sometimes you can get cooking utensils from your seniors during their departure but it is not always the case.
You may eager to know about the food. Yes we can buy almost every spices (slightly higher price than in Nepal). Rice, pulses, noodles are also common. It is advisable to take some spices as your choice. Typical Nepalese foods like sinki, gundruk, maseura, sukuti, achar could be interesting but beware about quarantine issues.
Regarding stationery and books, we don't recommend carrying any note books. If you have no overweight problem, you can bring some durable stationery items like staple, punching machine, knock pencil highlighters etc but again the price doesn’t differs significantly here. We can't advise anything about books because that differs with course. Most of case the reader is available from course coordinator and you will get online study materials for your registered course. Every year professors switch to new edition, so its not advisable to buy books. In any case, we think, it is better not to buy book there
Of course, you can bring some specialized softwares otherwise you can also buy here in University shop. You can also use University desktops when you need those software. Most students completed course without buying any software. If you want to install in your laptop then you have to buy. It is better to bring some common softwares, antivirus and specific softwares for your study programme.
Smoking: Cigarettes are very expensive here. If you smoke, better to bring some in order to save some money as well as to get Nepali cigarettes taste. Surti is not available here, but bringing large quantity could be illegal, so check immigration procedure and decide yourself.
Don't forget to take some typical Nepalese gift items that you can present to your advisers and intimate friends.
We are not sure whether Nepal dress (daura /suruwal, gunyucholi) may be necessary or not. We use these in cultural program, if you bring, it can be used once or twice in a year.
May be, you are in confuse how much money should be in your wallet when you leave for Holland. After your arrival, they will give you your allowances immediately. In our opinion about 100 euros will be more than enough if you don’t have any plan to buy in duty free shops. If everything goes with schedule, you will spend only around 20-40 euros.
You will need some photos for official uses. If you take those photos from Nepal they are useless, so don't waste money to take passport size photos. You have to make them here from the professional photographers.
Regarding sports, we used to play football for fun and exercise. You may bring football shoes or you can buy here (much expensive). For other games, university sport centre has provision, so it is very difficult to advice in group. You can contact us for particular sport if you need any information before your departure.
Laptop/computer: You can buy as of same price of Nepal with genuine operating system. It is better to ask personally with any of us. Its better to buy here to avoid the future repair problem. Dont forget to bring a backpack laptop bag which can be used for multipurpose such as carrying books, doing marketing etc.
Take all the documents including your scholarship offer letter with your passport in Hand carry. Sometime they will ask the letter in immigration.
The information is based on some of our experiences. It is not hard and fast as exactly stated above. Personal circumstance differs so just take the essence of these advices.
